Jane took her time getting ready for bed. She took an extra minute brushing her teeth, flossing, washing her face. She even made herself a cup of tea with a spoonful of honey. As she waited for the tea to cool down, her mind wandered.
Tonight, was day one of John’s boxing night. When he first brought up that he would be out until three in the morning in a boxing gym, she thought he was lying.
“If you’re seeing someone else just tell me. Don’t waste my time with lies,” Jane said.
He showed her the price of the classes, the hours they’re open, and this seemed to ease her mind a bit.
With John at her side, she falls asleep within minutes of her head hitting the pillow. With him gone she kept turning her head at all the noises around her, constantly looking at the time, hoping she would soon hear the keys turn the lock.
When he finally did come home she tried her best not to jump up and run to the door.
“How was the first night at the gym?”
“Meh,” was all John said.
“That bad? Are you tired? Hungry?”
“Fuck Jane, I just came in. Give me a minute.”
Jane swallowed the knot quickly forming in her throat and walked back into the bedroom. She pretended to be asleep as he took his clothes off and hopped into the shower. Jane stood up and grabbed a few tissues to wipe away her tears before he saw them.
When he got out of the bathroom, she once again put her head on the pillow and didn’t turn, not even when she felt the bed dip with his weight.
She counted the minutes until he reached over and said, “you asleep?”
“Mmhhh?”
She felt his arms wrap around her waist and his wet hair rub against her shoulder. He might of upset her, but she loved the fact that he also couldn’t sleep without her.
