He watched, helpless, as the door closed behind her. He stood there a long moment, processing, hoping she would change her mind and open the door to him again. But nothing happened. As he walked down the hallway, all he could do was replay the scene from moments ago.
“I need you to leave,” Paige said, not meeting Elliot’s eyes.
“Oh, come on, that isn’t really what you want? You need me, Paige. You always will.”
She looked down at the marks he left on her legs not long ago. She wasn’t upset anymore, just disappointed in herself, disappointed that she let it get this far. She saw the red flags and chose to ignore them. She dismissed the way her friends and family talked down on him.
It started great, as it always does. He cooked for her, dried her tears up when watching sad movies, took her on dates, and kissed her hand as he held it. Then she noticed small outbursts when he was annoyed about something. Outbursts about having to take the dog out, doing his homework, nagging. The first time she nagged him, it scared her how much his voice changed. But she shrugged it off like it was nothing.
Now she was sitting in front of him, looking at the physical representation of his violence. “Elliot, please don’t make this harder than it needs to be. You said the very first time we slept together that you didn’t want a relationship. This isn’t a breakup, just a goodbye.”
Elliot’s head tipped back in laughter, “This isn’t goodbye. You’re going to beg e to take you back as soon as I leave. You always will.”
Paige couldn’t take it anymore, but she didn’t want to lose her cool in front of him. She would never give him that satisfaction. “I’m sorry you feel that way, but this is it, Elliot. Have a great life.”
She stood up and opened the door for him. He was still smiling until he reached the other side of the door and saw her close the door behind her.
