Elegantly articulated and masterfully crafted with care, JoAnneh Nagler delivers eleven short stories that will stay in the hearts and minds of readers for a long time. The book starts off with the story of Ponty Bayswater, and he is without a doubt my favorite character in this book. His willingness to learn about sex, his love and devotion for his wife, his willingness to open himself up to sexuality, all make him one of the most memorable characters in the book.
What’s unique about Nagler’s stories is that they all intertwine so even if one story ends and a beloved character is missed, they show up again through the lens of someone else. Nagler takes everyday life and turns it into something magical. She goes through difficult topics such as sexuality, loss, coming of age, and does so bravely and unapologetically. Her style is unlike anything I’ve read in a while, and I thank whatever fate allowed me to choose this book to review. While I had to look at this book as a reviewer, I have nothing but good things to say about this book.
Reading this all that went through my mind was that this was an instant classic. Not only is it profoundly moving, but it is also a book for every kind of audience. No matter where you came from or who you’re attracted to, there is at least one story where everyone can relate to. While reading this I wished I had a physical copy so that I can mark favorite passages and annotate along the spine. This book is for anyone who has loved, who has lost, who has overcome or is overcoming something major in their life. Stay with Me, Wisconsin is an exceptionally powerful book.
